Liquids do not break the fast \u2013 that was a fasting rule in the times of the Benedictine monks in Wei\u00dfenohe. Nowadays we owe this rule to the mirror carp as a fasting food and the strong double buck as liquid food in these barren times.<\/p>\n
In this tradition, we have brewed our strong Bonator as a dark Doppelbock for you, for physical and mental strengthening in the “staaden” time. Matching to: You don’t need food for a Doppelbock, the Bonator itself is the liquid bread of Lent!<\/p>\n
Here is a little anecdote to make you smile: Since the Benedictine monks feasted on the more heavily brewed bock beers during the sparse Lent period, this aroused the envy of other religious communities. They complained to the Pope in Rome: the Benedictines would not fast with their bock beers, but feast! The Benedictines, on account of this complaint, sent a barrel of bock beer to Rome, in order to let the Pope taste and decide for himself. Since they knew their beer and its shelf life from Bavaria to Rome during the journeys that lasted weeks and months in the Middle Ages, they did not do so without ulterior motives. Because the beer sent arrived, as expected, spoiled, i.e. undrinkably sour. Whereupon the Pope, after a careful tasting, said: “Whoever drinks such a horrible beer is a true penitent”. The Benedictines loved to continue doing this penance and fasted with (fresh) bock beer.<\/p>\n
Note: Of course, beer was not only drunk for the alcohol. Beer contains a lot of minerals, vitamins and sugar in a digested and therefore easily digestible form. The monks were very knowledgeable in health and medical contexts and knew that beer prevents deficiency symptoms. Our Bonator Doppelbock is a strong, reddish-dark beer speciality brewed according to monastic tradition.
\nA traditional, elaborate cooking mash process gives this beer its distinctive baroque body.
